Job Hunt Report: World Access Marketing

I had an interesting, if not intense, interview last Friday with World Access Marketing. http://www.worldaccessmarketing.com. I urge you to check out their website which is mediocre at being long-winded and high-impact while stating nothing. I also urge you to check out the bad things people are writing about them at http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/097/RipOff0097045.htm. That link is the number two hit on Google when you search for “World Access Marketing.” Also, searching for “World Access Marketing scam” on Google leads to this: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=HF4&q=world+access+marketing+scam&btnG=Search .

Anyhow, this is how the entertaining day went: It starts the afternoon before the interview on Thursday, March 6. I was bored with the job search, sick and frustrated with spinning my wheels when I opted to post a less than professional resume on a job search site under the name Tommy Kirchmeier. (I use Tom Kirchmeier professionally the way that Bill Shatner uses William Shatner.) The resume read as follows:

Where I have worked is not important, short of dropping the name Pfizer (Management, 2004-2008). Anyone can manage but can they interact? If you want specialization, there are a thousand resumes on this site. If you want someone intelligent and adventurous who can grow, adapt and react in a changing situation, get to know me:

Within a half hour of posting the above, I had a phone call from World Access Marketing. I thought, “Great, a place with a sense of humor. I can get on there.” The woman on the other end of the phone stated that they were a marketing company and they needed someone right away. They were moving quickly to hire someone and she asked if I could come in at 1:30 the next day. I agreed and she went on to say that they were in Lodi and asked if I knew where that was.

“LODI,” I said, “Is that a new neighborhood? Long on down Island, perhaps?” I mean let’s face it, in my lifetime NYC has added SOHA, NOHA, NOHO, and LIC . Not to mention, we have started calling New York City “NYC” in that time.

She replied that, no, it was Lodi, New Jersey but that it was only twenty minutes from the City.

Now, before I continue, I must explain a few things:

1) Everyone in ‘Jersey thinks that everything in ‘Jersey is twenty minutes from the city. This might be true but it also assumes that everyone in NYC lives just outside the Lincoln or Holland Tunnels and owns a car.

2) I have all of two friends from Brooklyn who own one car. They are a couple. This effectively indicates that I only ever have one friend, of all the people I know in BK, who is driving her or his own insurable mode of transportation at any given time. The rest of us are lucky if we own bikes. Bikes are not insured. And, come to think of it, that couple moved out onto Long Island last month. So I essentially have no friends in Brooklyn with a car, only friends from Brooklyn.

So I neither live near the tunnel nor own a car which means that twenty minutes from the city automatically turns into a half hour on the train from Penn Station.

I ask her if they have a train station nearby. She tells me, “No, but there is a bus stop right around the corner at a 7-11.” She will send me public transit directions.

Now, before I continue, I must explain a few things:

1) New Yorkers distrust busses. They don’t go on tracks and they remain above-ground in the city. They can take wrong turns, break down, blow a tire. Also, bus stops aren’t labeled nearly as well as train stations.

2) There are a lot of 7-11’s in ‘Jersey.

She sends me directions and, as it is almost 5 PM, I feel committed at this point to take the interview.

I leave my glorious BK apartment/castle at 11:00 on Friday, giving myself two hours to get to Lodi, if this place does exist. I walk fifteen minutes to the G Train. Wait forever. Connect to the 7 Train. Wait a little less. Take the 7 to the eastern end of the Port Authority. Walk to the western end of Port Authority and buy a bus ticket. Walk back to the eastern end of the Port Authority. I wait a really long time for the bus. Board the bus and follow a map I have brought along to the 7-11 in Lodi. Being a bus and not a train, bus stops are not labeled and there are a lot of 7-11’s in NJ, I can’t stress this enough. I pay particular attention to the streets and I do make it to Lodi with time to spare. I hang out in my suit and tie in front of a Pathmark, wishing I at least smoked so that I wouldn’t look like a ne’re-do-well. Finally, it is time to cross the lot and go to my interview.

I enter the building which appears a little run-down. I assume that the rent is good. Up a flight of stairs, I find a long hallway with lots of sports logos. (They are supposedly a sports-marketing company of some kind. This should have set off an alarm as no sports marketing company should be that close to NYC but not in NYC.) There are also a lot of jackets hung on hooks, grade-school style. No one is in the office but a big fun plasma TV is blaring some cable sports network. I want to watch politics. I call the woman from the day before. She comes running from some dimly lit hallway, past the main office and plasma TV, and meets me. She seats me by the TV. She asks me to fill out paperwork but it does not include tax info. The whole time she is impersonal yet aggressive. I can’t remember ever making eye-contact but I felt obliged to fill out the paperwork or loose my opportunity to interview, similar to how I felt obliged to take a walk, a train, a train, a bus and a walk to get here.

I oblige, and fill out the paperwork.

At this point, I remember the time I walked into the Scientologist headquarters on 82nd St to check them out. I consider using a false name as I did when I visited the Scientologists. By the time I have completed the document, another person has shown up. He begins filling out paperwork as well. I hand in my paperwork and am told someone will be with me shortly. Again, no eye-contact.

At about 1:40, I am greeted by a Napoleonic version of a frat-boy in a tie. He is affable enough but also strangely aggressive. He is about ten years younger than I am. He is meeting with me because the owner of the company, whom I was supposed to meet, had to be off in Dallas. He states this as if Dallas is somewhere exotic. As far as I know, there is no city named Dallas in Asia, so I assume the owner is in that wonderful state, Texas, which I would so love to give back to Mexico.

The kid brings me into his office and we begin the interview. He asks what I have done in the past and I launch into my usual spiel about recently managing at Pfizer and all the great things I have done before that. Within two minutes, he asks what I want to do. Having never received a job description from World Access Marketing, I have no real way of tailoring my answer to his question. I figure they are a marketing company, so I start talking about Photoshop and graphics design. He points to some amateurish color printouts of what appear to be coupons and tells me that they do some graphics design. Great, now I’m getting somewhere. I also know that I will not be taking a job where I wear a tie and need a bus out to Lodi each morning. Knowing that I will not be taking a job where I wear a tie and need a bus out to Lodi each morning, I suggest he look at my website. He loves it. The animations put him into a trance.

Now, chances are very good that you are on my website at this moment. I like my website. It’s artsy. It displays the fun I have with photography, video and animation. I also love the way the baby-head logo sticks in people’s minds. But it is not a professional website in terms of content or execution.

This guy eats it up.

He turns from the site and asks me, “No, but what do you want to do?”

Now, I hate this question. I want to get a job that ends at 5 and pays for my art, my reading, my drinking and my rent, pretty much in that order. I of course can’t state that on an interview. I generally stumble past this question with grand plans about how I like to be a part of Continuing Medical Education and ensure that patients receive proper treatment. I can’t use this either because sick and dieing patients don’t need sports marketing.

I fall flat on my face.

He tells me that I am awarded a second interview.

I will be in business for myself (hence, the lack of tax paperwork) and everyone starts by making phone calls for the first six months.

Those of you who know me, and chances are you know me if you have read this far (after all, I can’t see someone who doesn’t know me reading this far, and I thank you for being my friend and reading this far) know that I hate telephones. They are impersonal and inhuman. I have broken up with women because I could not spend more than ten minutes on the phone. I have never had phone sex. If it were up to me, I would turn all phones into calculators or planters or shoe trees if I could figure out a way to do it.

The guy writes “110” on my resume and tells me that I will receive a call that night around 6:30. I’m not sure what 110 means.

So let me get this straight, I will wake up each morning, don a suit and tie, take a walk, a train, another train, a bus and another walk in order to make phone calls for six months and apparently stay until at least 6:30 on Fridays.

I tell him that I will be at the Knicks game at 6:30. He says he will leave a message and we start talking about the Knicks. I know about as much about the Knicks as I do this new job but somehow, I make it through the conversation. I give him a copy of my real resume, figuring he can show it to the guy in Dallas. He doesn’t seem to care and lets me go. I say he lets me go because he doesn’t walk me to the door. He doesn’t say goodbye. He just kind of says we are done, I will have a second interview and he calls the next person into his office.

The whole interview took less than seventeen minutes. That includes the paperwork. At 1:47, I found myself in the parking lot, walking to the bus. In the end, I never received that call during the Knicks game. It was an entertaining Friday until I went to the Garden and watched the Knicks loose a no-contest to Detroit. I also had an entertaining Saturday when I finally had a chance to research World Access Marketing and had my suspicions confirmed that they were in fact, a scam.

Oh. My. God. Thank you SO much for this! I have an interview with those assholes tomorrow and I am so not going. It's so disappointing. I had another interview tomorrow morning, but that place turned out to be a goddamn scam, too. Will I EVER find a real job???

Anyway, thanks again for the heads-up and the saved trip!

Wow. Thanks for the 411. I had my first interview today. Got called back this evening. Supposed to go back on Thursday for an 11 am to 8 pm session in the field with an account manager (told to wear "comfortable" shoes).
During my interview with "Ralph" the actual job description was fuzzy. Ralph said he just came back from an out-of-state biz trip with 2 other guys during which they made "66 contacts." (((Meantime, I'm selling myself like mad. Been a reporter & editor, huge variety of beats, overseas travel, etc. etc.)) I asked what the job involved in making all those contacts. No explanation at all.

Decided to Google the company tonight and came across your comments. There's another bad account on ripoffreport.com.

Hey guys, it's hell finding a job. And we fall for this stuff on Monster & Career Builder.

FYI: I think picking a company and going on their web site and responding to their job openings is a much better way to go. At least you target a reputable company.

I also got a reply from this company, and got a bad feeling from the speed in which they responded. They got back to me within hours, and the pre-written form letter was emailed to me at 11 pm that night.

I thought before I even contacted them again to google the company name and "scam." Guess what turned up first? This site. Thank you!

Call me dumb, cause that's what I'm calling myself... I also got a interview response from this so called marketing company. To be perfectly honetst, I was a little excited about getting called back for an interview. Stupid me cause I never actually bothered to do any research about "World Access Marketing" till I was already done with their second interview. And by the way this second interview view is a whole day (about 8 hours) of walking around and you're not paid 1 penny for your time.
GUYS DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME... UNLESS YOU HAVE WANT TO WORK FOR ABOUT 12-13 HOURS A DAY FOR 6 DAYS A WEEK. AND THEN GET PAID ALMOST NEXT TO NOTHING FOR IT. WITH A PROMISE OF 6-10 WEEKS YOU'LL GET PROMOTED. IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WITH THAT... SURE YOU CAN GIVE IT A TRY BUT I WOULDN'T RECOMENDED IT.

I actually just quit this job about a month ago. The day I started I was told, along with everyone else working at Home Depot, that Home Depot would pay us minimum wage as an overlay to our ocmmission. For those of you who don't understand, if my wages were to come out to be $50 a day but I got three sales leads at $20 a lead, I would only get paid $60 instead of $110. Anyway after working 3 days I quit that shit hole after they made me drive all the way down to South Plainfield for a bullshit meeting...I had to pay for my own gas. It took four phone calls over a weeks time before they agreed to pay me. My check should have been $150 but it only came to $90 after taxes. This place is a scam. I am making a group on facebook about it within the next two weeks. I am doing this to warn people about this company because they prey on college kids. If you are interested in becoming a part of this group then just add me.

I Knew it!!!! I applied for an "entry Level client manager position" through careerbuilder.com, I received a reply email within 20 minutes and they sent me the link to their website. As soon as I saw their site... I was like "huuummmmm... this looks a little fishy..." sure enough I googled the company and I began to see posts and sites saying that World Access Marketing is a scam... then I come across this blog too. Thank you for saving me. I feel bad though... I need a new job in New Jersey badly and I was excited when I received a response. Oh well... at least I will not waste my time on BS.

Just to let everyone know, there are a few other companies identical to this scheme out there. I unfortunately interviewed with both before I realized it. These companies are BUSINESS SOLUTIONS INTERNATIONAL and GOLDLINE PROMOTIONS. Both were based in MA and were just terrible. I have realized that if a company posts more than a couple times on Monster, there is something wrong.

TOMMY...this if funny but sadly true I had a similar experience with a so called marketing firm. Yea right...called BOLD ACQUISITIONS. They are located in Tarrytown, NY
..................Read ON

So I get two emails from this company and decide to go on the interview. They are located on the 4th floor. First of all the Door to this place or firm looked like a Janitor's Closet. To Top that off the woman who greeted me was the Receptionist/VP of Human Resources.....hmmm does she also help run the elevator by pushing buttons? What I'm just Saying! They said that they had 35 employees but only enough room for 2 people?

The INTERVIEW was 15 mins and get this the hours were mon-fri 11:45am till 8:45pm. sat 11-4pm. Wait it gets better in order to promote you have to drive all around. hmmm with gas prices??!!!So I was not interested but stayed for the entertainment! How funny was this. They said that they promote in 6 weeks...lol whatever. They never talked about salary and they invited me to day 2 of 3 interview. Yea they wanted me to shadow a representative for 8 hrs....without getting PAID or HIRED. They must have lost their minds.

Today I recieve and email from Worl Access Marketing....BOTTOM LINE. TIME IS MONEY.. and if looks like BULLSHIT...smells like BULLSHIT....then its BULLSHITS. lol they call me lemons cause i slice throught the bullshit.

I am so glad I came across this. I have a decent job but am looking to venture off in the Marketing field so I figured I would give these jerks a try...

Applied online through Monster on 9/24/08 at 11:30p.m. got an email at 2p.m. 9/25/08 congratulating me bc my resume had been selected from the masses and they would like to set up an interview...Hmmm?!?!? I don't know about this...sounds too good to be true...you ain't kiddin my BK friend!!! Thanks to you I will not go to the interview scheduled for tomorrow morning.

World Access Marketing should be ashamed of themselves!!

To all in the job hunt...know you're not alone...and in due time the right job will come...keep your head up...I will do the same...in the meantime I'm taking my butt back to work!!! World Access...MY ASS!!!

Hi all. Thanks for all the responses. I just wanted to let everyone know that I told a friend about this "interview" and he referred me to a movie called Boiler Room. A lot of what was going on in my head. I remember thinking, “Why am I taking a bus out to ‘Jersey for a marketing job when I live in the capital of marketing, NYC?” That follows the main character’s thoughts almost word for word: “Why am I driving out to Long Island for a finance job when I live in the capital of finance, NYC?” I did a little research on the director and found out that he took a similar job and much of the movie was based on his experiences. I recommend the movie if you want to be entertained and thankful that you did not take the position.

I must say I’m glad I did not take the job though I’m not unhappy with the whole silly experience. At least it has brought people to my ‘blog. And I guess if people are seeing my ‘blog, some good marketing came out of the “interview.”

I’m happy to say that my job hunt ended a few weeks after this experience. Good luck to all of you with your job hunts!

They now call themselves ISG (or IS-G)... same offices (lodi, nj) and phone numbers, different names (Simon, Amy, Amber, Carolyn). Paul Wyatt still keeps his name however. I'm not sure how much longer this company is going to be able to stick around as they are being completely exploited by angry job hunters everywhere.

I knew this was too good to be true. I'm an interior designer for custom homes. We all know the housing market is bad right now. The add on career builder read:

Sales - Marketing
Homebuilding
Other Great Industries

I have an interveiw on Friday. I asked for their website to research the company. is-g.org. When you so on the site their is a night photo of The Statue of Liberty and nothing more.

I called ICG to let them know their site was down, and the girl said it was under construction and it takes a long time to open.

I got suspicious and googled the phone number: 973-472-2400. I found a lot of positive articles and found this site and others like it. Thank you!

Yes! I have been applying for marketing jobs in NY / NJ. I had a response from the above company that seemed too good to be true...IT IS!

The company website seemed fine, I guess. But suspicions were confirmed when I googled the phone numbera nd found that the address and phone number are the same as those of World Access Marketing.

Thanks for posting this in your blog.

i worked for the company now calls its self is-g in lodi,nj. It was and is 110% scam. You are solicting 12 hours a day. I worked there for about a week. You are oustide in the rain snow below 30 degree weather solicting and driving 30 min-1 hr+ to where ever you are chose to solicitate. There is absolutley no benefits no proffessional management. They use many fake names. all interviews 1,2,and 3rd are all the same. 2 hour cult meetings practicing your "pitch" to solicitate every one.You are bothering local businesses owners and there customers by trying to sell bull-crap coupons and promotional tickets. Thet use fake names you have to pay for your own gas, tolls, hotels and any othe exspense. Is-G is a waste of time and misleading solicting brainwashed no-life cult jerks. They are setting up offices all over the united states with the same view. Do not waste your time. This job and company should be shut down. I wish there was a way we can do something about this. If so Put me n the list to testify.

Let me start of by saying that i am one of the individuals that fell for this scam. I am a college student that was just looking for a way to learn more about the marketing field of study outside of the classroom, but the internship that i signed for at World Access Marketing was nothing but a waste of my time and money!

I also want to make it clear that i am not an idiot i did do my research on the company before i took the job, but all i saw was the positive news articles of great work and money that they were making as a company and for their clients, while only being established for a short period of time.

As most of you stated in previous blogs i too went through the same interview process and they did not hesitate to hire me, it was as if anyone was qualified for the job. When going out on the second interview they showed me what they called a "basic" day of work from 930am to 8pm, but not what i was going to be doing everyday. This was basically a trip to a local or distant home depot. When we arrived there i was just shadowing who they called a "top agent" of the company to see how he worked his magic. He was approaching all of the individuals in the store and telling them to sign up for some free promotions that home depot was doing for its customers. Even if the individual did not seem interested he still was insisting that they signed up. That same day the top agent had brought another associate with him and toward the middle of the day i paired up with this other associate. He was a little more realistic and honest with me, telling me that this was a commission based job and it is not what people typically want to do but it pays weekly and if you put a little effort into your job and give away free stuff everyday it will pay off in the end. It sounded pretty convincing to me, i would get paid weekly as an intern, work with young people, and give away free stuff....sounded easy.

I TOOK THE JOB!

On my first day of work i walked into the back room which was a small room with four white walls and no chairs???? we had to stand in that room for 2 hrs every morning and train, in addition to listening to the CEO's pity success stories of how he made it to were he was by starting off just at the bottom. I never gave into his bullshit stories because all he cared about was the money we were making him out on the field everyday, while he sat in his office doing nothing. During our training sessions they taught us ways to turn peoples negativity to positivity. They were teaching us how to be persuasive. A day on the field consisted of being a home depot associate without the orange apron, i would approach individuals and let them kno about the promotions that were going on and luckily they would sign up for free estimates, if not then i wouldn’t get paid for that day of 8hrs work!!... On top of that if i was one of the lucky few to be selected to drive to the home depot in "east bumblefuck" about and hour or more away that day i would NOT be given gas money, with the ridiculous gas prices at the time it was a high expense. In addition our intelligent CEO would sometimes forget to pay us for our work or pay us for half of our work. There was ALWAYS a problem with the pay checks.

I continued with this job for my entire summer...a good 4 months of my life wasted...i did make a good amount of money, but it was not the marketing job experience that i was looking for, it was like a sales job. I was not brainwashed either like a couple of co-workers, they had such high hopes about the promises that this company was making but they did not realize that some promises were not met for those that have even been with the company for more that a year...(the promise was that you would own ur own marketing company after 7 months)

LETS BE SERIOUS HERE???

The best part of my job were my co-workers, we were all young college students that liked to party and knew we had a shitty job, but we had the mentality that we weren’t quitters and the money was good for some of us, we sucked it up and just did it.

It could have been another ENRON if i wanted to make it that way with all the corruption that was going on with in the company, but sometimes it is better to keep to yourself and at the end of my internship i let them know that i would not be coming back....

I hope that those who are looking to go into marketing NEVER look into this company because sooner or later they are going to be shut down for what they are doing. If you want a sales job and you dont have a life and can work all day then give it a shot see if you like it.......

All in all you learn from all your experiences... and i can say that this is one job that is not going to bring much success to anyone.

WOW! This is funny... all the comments about this company! They also called me for an interview within 1 day of me applying. My husband was hesitant and knew right off the bat that it was a scam. I was a bit skeptical, but was trying to be optimistic about it.

The lady who called me seemed very intense and dramatic. She kind of rushed me off the phone. Whatever, I guess I won't be going to my interview tomorrow.

I got a call to.

I knew exactly who they were.

They told me this glorious job and how I would benefit by working for them.

The "teenie bopper", girl told me they work for the "Yankees", "Nets" and "Knicks".

I then tell her I tried out for two major League Baseball teams and ask about salary.

She must have choked on a hamsandwich, because after gaining her breadth, she tells me the job wasn't for me.

I tell her I read the reports on the internet and immidatley called each pro's front office to let them know of the scam.

I can only hope the Yanks, Nets and Knicks shut these morons down for good.

Beware they are friggin liars, scam artists wanna be's and all I can say is report them to the Better Buinsess Bureau of Lodi as well as Chamber of Commerce...

Be careful everyone. thanks Tom!!!!
where ever you may be...and good luck to all seeking work.

good grief. Right out of college in 2007, I fell for this awful scam. I had the same interview and it was probably with the same guy. I was told that the next day I would go "out in the field" with an 'account representative' and "learn how to have meetings with clients." Well..the field is composed of shady areas of the ghetto in order to scare business owners into buying employee rights posters and first aid kits. The 'account manager' tells the owners that we work closely with OSHA and they will be doing random checks to make sure these posters are hung..which is not true. at the end of the day, as a trainee, you are paid 20-60 dollars for your 12 hour work day. in cash. My account manager decided since I made no sales (on my first day) that I would be awarded $20. less than $2/hr. I went for a few days since I needed the money, but eventually my tires got slashed while "out in the field" and 2 'account managers' got arrested for soliciting. This company opens and then shuts down and re-opens under different names. awful.

Its funny...i used to work for this company out of college in jan to june of 2007...after reading posts i find it funny as i can relate to a lot of what u all have said. There is some truth in the posts and also a bit misunderstanding. As an ex science major in college i wanted to do something in sports and me too, once i submitted my resume received an email back from them. Long story short (not to bore anyone) i needed a job so i kept it after they offered me. As a former collegiate athlete and being extremely competitive i was determined to sell the yankee, nets, and entertainment coupons as i was not doing well with it in the beginning. I began to get really good at the direct sales and was very successful. On successful days id make 120 n others 30 or 40. One being decent money (not really) and one being terrible. What kept me going was the promise they gave everyone as if u sold a lot n managed ppl on ur" team" to do the same u could open ur own company. That's what kept me there so long. (They weren't lying about that as the executive that took me on my second interview opened one in Pittsburgh). Long story short i did real well but it just wasn't my passion to sell coupons and manage ppl to do the same (not very life changing or making a difference in society) so i quit. To wrap it up i would say this: sketchy at first yes, do they hire almost everyone-yes, are they lying about opening up ur own identical business elsewhere-no(i saw two ppl do it), its great opportunity to learn how to sell cold call directly, whether u liked their products aka coupons or not they were legit n some great deals (yankees discounts n bogo free nets tix). LESSON- if ur willing to bust ur butt working long hours, go to rich, blue collar, and or sketchy ghettos in ny or nj to sell good to decent coupons and have no problem working in owning a coupon business GO TAKE THE JOB. If u don't want to work hard (which most ppl don't which is a big problem in this country today) or don't like this line of business (which is why i left) then DON'T TAKE THE JOB. If ur willing to sacrifice a lot of time, work, good n bad days and exercise humility to open ur own business like this then go for it.
